Thanks to Joe Bongiorno, who first dragged me kicking and screaming into the mucky mythos of Swamp Thing, and to Paul Giachetti, who created the amazing header banner.

Thanks also to reader 'Alec Holland,' whose support has been invaluable; Mike Sterling, for promoting Swamp Thing and this site; and Kevin Church, for his excellent optimization advice.

And thanks to Len Wein, Bernie Wrightson, Alan Moore, John Totelben, Stephen Bissette, Jamie Delano, Garth Ennis and all the other creators whose work inspired this site.

House of Secrets Issue #140
Welcome to the Bog!

This website chronicles the saga of the "muck-encrusted mockery of a man" known as the Swamp Thing, as well as its spinoff titles, Hellblazer and The Un-Men. After two years on hiatus, I've decided to begin updating once more.

All four
Swamp Thing incarnations have been added, along with guest appearance in other titles. As for Hellblazer, I've chronicled the Jamie Delano years and most of Garth Ennis' run, and soon plan to get back to that task, along with adding The Un-Men to the timeline.

To access the chronology, click here or choose an era at left. And to read the latest news in the world of
Swamp Thing, scroll down.

Then... Korea!
Feb. 27, 2012

This morning, Mike Sterling—he of the Ruin that is Progressive—explored how several comics would benefit from the addition of a shocking trasition-to-war panel in 1952's Battle Stories #5. However, he overlooked an important one—namely, the first Swamp Thing series' "lost" issue 25, "The Sky Above." Therefore, I thought I'd helpfully correct his oversight.

Big Swamp Thing News Right Around the Corner
Oct. 27, 2011

I was contacted by Heritage Auctions' Mark Stokes today, and was informed of a very cool development on the Swamp Thing front. Stay tuned to this space over the next few days, as it's BIG—and I'll give you a hint in the meantime... Swamp Thing Meets Hawkman. As soon as I've got more to report, I'll be sure to do so.

Yep, I've Heard
Apr. 10, 2011

The blogosphere has been abuzz with news of Swamp Thing's return in the pages of Brightest Day, and I wanted to explain why I won't be covering it: I don't plan to buy it, so I won't be reading it. This isn't any sort of attempt to make a big statement or anything... I just don't care for Spandex'ed superhero stories, and most of the past issues in which Swamp Thing and John Constantine interacted with such characters were my least favorites of their respective runs.

Yes, I know that both titles had their beginnings in the mainstream DC universe, but it simply doesn't interest me, so I plan to skip it. And, well, that's about it. If Swamp Thing ever comes back in his own monthly series, sans superheroes, I'll be there. Probably.

In the meantime, I'm still reading Hellblazer... but I'm not really enjoying it. Milligan's run has been weak, all over the place and pocked by continuity problems, and his take on Constantine himself doesn't work for me.

Frankly, I think it'd be a blessing if Hellblazer were to end at issue #300. Since I was recently informed that my subscription to the comic had been canceled (apparently, DC is no longer offering Hellblazer subscriptions), I wouldn't be surprised if that's going to happen.

Revisiting "The Elemental War"
Nov. 12, 2010

FirestormFan.com takea a look back at the four-part team-up between Swamp Thing and Firestorm: The Nuclear Man. It wasn't my favorite storyline, but it definitely had some fun moments. (Thanks to blogger Shag for the heads-up, and for his excellent blog.)

Happy Halloween: Presenting Swamp Thing Costumes... Sort of
Oct. 31, 2010

Since it's Halloween, and since many bloggers and movie reviewers have historically mistaken Swamp Thing for a monster-type villain instead of the hero that he is, I thought I'd take a look at the ol' Google and see what Swamp Thing-related costumes are out there. The results were rather... amusing.

Interview: Kevin Gentilcore Discusses His
Unpublished Swamp Thing Work

Oct. 30, 2010

Last month, Roots of the Swamp Thing site posted the outline and script to Weedkiller, an unpublished Swamp Thing miniseries from author Kevin Gentilcore and artist Daniel Crosier. Crosier graciously answered several questions about his woodburning illustrations that would have accompanied that script had it been published by Vertigo, and now Gentilcore takes the mic.

Sept. 25, 2010

Roots of the Swamp Thing is extremely pleased to be able to introduce readers, for the first time, to Gentilcore's outline for the miniseries, as well as the script to issue #1—and they seem like they would have made for one heck of a miniseries. Sept. 24, 2010

UPDATED: The artist has sent me additional wood-burnings from his Swamp Thing portfolio, which I've added to the page linked below. Thanks, Daniel—once again, I'm in awe of your work!

ORIGINAL POST, Sept. 1, 2010: The Denver-based artist, known for his wood-burning comic illustration technique, approached DC Comics, along with writer Kevin Gentilcore, with a five-page submission in April 2009, hoping to land a gig working on Swamp Thing. Although that goal did not ultimately pan out, Crosier has graciously agreed to discuss the proposal with Roots of the Swamp Thing. (NOTE: Stay tuned for an upcoming interview with Gentilcore, who has offered to have the script in question posted on this site.)

News of a fifth Swamp Thing comic-book series was announced this week, to be published by Vertigo. According to a story today at BleedingCool.com, "China Miéville, award-winning English sci-fi novelist and socialist politician with repeat Hugo nominations for his novels Perdido Street Station, The Scar, Iron Council and The City & The City, was approached by Vertigo to start Swamp Thing afresh. He’d already written a short Hellblazer story for issue 250. A series bible had been written, and scripts were being written. And then… Vertigo were told to scrap it. Bin the lot, pay a kill fee." So what happened? It appears DC has gotten its claws on the character once more.

Roots of the Swamp Thing Is Back in Business
June 1, 2010

For the past two years, I've been working on finishing up two Planet of the Apes reference books. It was grueling work, but rewarding—and I'm almost done with the second one. As such, I figured it was time to dust off the ol' Swamp Thing site, and to this time try to remain active with it. For now, I'll just be posting news updates, but in the next few months, once I've gotten the second book off to the printer, I plan to jump back into this site wholeheartedly, and get back to chronicling Hellblazer on the timeline, adding new entries to In the Swamplight, updating the calendar and so forth.

God, I've missed this mucky place.
